Bariatric Surgeon Doctor

Clinical Experience & Skills

I started as a consultant at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital in 2014 as a bariatric and resectional oesophago-gastric surgeon.

Resectional Upper GI Surgery
My experience in resectional oesophago-gastric surgery includes open and hybrid two/ three – stage oesophagectomy, open and laparoscopic total and sub-total gastrectomy. Working closely with thoracic surgeons, I added left thoraco abdominal approach for oesophago-gastric malignancies and oesophageal perforations to my repertoire.

With newer procedures being described for bariatric surgery along with the exponential increase in the requirement for revisional and complex bariatric/ endoscopic surgery, I decided to discontinue resectional oesophago-gastric surgery in May 2019.

Benign Upper GI Surgery
I routinely perform Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, anti-reflux surgery (fundoplication, LINX), hiatus hernia repair, Heller’s myotomy and Laparoscopic incisional hernia repair. I provide a tertiary referral service for re-do/ revisional hiatal surgery.

Bariatric Surgery
I have performed over 2000 primary bariatric procedures including Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, Roux en Y gastric bypass, One anastomosis gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. The BMI range for these procedures has extended upto 100 kg/m2 with weights exceeding 290 kg.

To add to this, I have performed over 250 revisional bariatric procedures for patients with one or two previous failed bariatric procedures. I also provide a tertiary referral service for patients who need to undergo revisional surgery following previous complications for bariatric surgery and

Upper GI Endoscopy
I continue to perform complex and therapeutic Upper GI endoscopy including stent insertion, dilatations and a limited number of EMRs. I also offer endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty as an endoscopic option for weight loss to minor sub-group of eligible patients.

Research Experience

I lead the Bariatric and Upper GI research unit at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and am the PI for three national trials.

1. By band Sleeve trial – An NIHR funded portfolio study that compares the outcomes between the 3 commonly performed bariatric procedures. It is the largest RCT on bariatric surgery in the world.

2. IIH:WT trial - Randomised control trial comparing medical therapy vs. bariatric surgery in patients with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. The outcome from this trial is expected to determine the best modality of treatment for these patients.

3. GLIDE - The Impact of the Combination of the GLP-1 Analogue Liraglutide (Victoza®) and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) on Diabetes Control

Stapling Research – This is animal lab based research whereby we evaluate efficacy of stapling technologies using different configurations of staplers and bowel in porcine models.

Laboratory Research (April 2009 – March 2011)
I undertook a period of research under the supervision of Professor Derek Alderson. I started work towards this project three years before I took time out of my rotation. The preparation for this research included writing a protocol to adequately answer the research question and obtaining an ethical approval to achieve the same. I subsequently was successful in obtaining a grant of £169,223 as lead applicant and co-authored another successful grant.

Title of project: Tissue and plasma metabolomics in oesophago-gastric carcinogenesis (http://etheses.bham.ac.UK/4246/1/Singhal13MD.pdf).

Ethical approval from LREC on – 16 May 2008 (Ref no. 08/H1207/03)

Bariatric Surgeon Meerut
